Designer Spotlight – Cirilia Rose

21 11 2010

If you’ve seen the beautiful cover of Vampire Knits, you’ve seen Cirilia Rose’s handiwork. Here’s a little bit more about her!

How long have you been knitting and how’d you get started?

I have been knitting for ages! I started when I was 7 or so, made a few squeaky acrylic blankets for my little stuffed dogs. Around age 14 or so I got my hands of a copy of Vogue Knitting which had a “design your own sweater” table. I decided I was going to make myself a black v-neck cardigan. I never finished it but I really loved that I could pick and choose all the design features myself. In college I picked up a copy of a similarly encouraging book, Debbie Stoller’s Stitch and Bitch and I never looked back.

How did you start designing?

Besides my early childhood attempts, I was working at Webs in Northampton, Massachusetts and they put out a call to all employees.

What was your first design?

My first design for the Webs catalog was the Stirling Cloche, a simple felted cloche made from a unique loop boucle mohair. People substitute all yarns for it all the time but I really love the distinctive fabric of felted mohair. I’m still very much a yarn driven designer.

What did you design for Vampire Knits?  What inspired you?

I designed the Lore Hoodie that appears on the cover! It’s my first book cover, so I’m really excited about that. I wasn’t inspired by any particular vampire tale, but I had been taking lots of walks in cold, snowy woods. A generous hood and a feminine lace pattern seemed like just the think for a person who lurks in the forest.

Who’s your favorite vampire, or what’s your favorite vampire story?

I’d have to go with Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He is such an interesting character in general, but the complicated relationship he has with Buffy is wonderful to watch. He’s so steadfast and deeply romantic underneath a prickly exterior. Watching his trajectory throughout the series is so absorbing (I get a LOT of knitting done watching Spike!). And I guess I’m a sucker for a sardonic vampire with a sense of style!

My apologies

14 11 2010

Hi all!  I’m so sorry I’ve been so absent lately. The Fall is in full swing, and with it comes illness.  My house has been hit for the last few weeks, 3 of us with 3 different ailments.

I promise to do another Designer Spotlight and share any news very very soon!!

Thanks,

~Genevieve
